Dear Parents and Guardians;
As I’m sure you are aware, there is a recent outbreak of Swine Flu in parts
of Mexico, the United States, Canada and elsewhere. While this is a very
rare disease, its appearance in humans is unusual. As President Obama said
today during a speech to the National Academy of Science, “this is obviously
a cause for concern and requires a heightened state of alert. But it's not a
cause for alarm.”
The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of regular influenza: high
fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches - some cases have nausea
and diarrhea. Treatment of the swine flu is the same as influenza: stay in
bed, rest and drink plenty of fluids. If you are concerned about your
symptoms, contact your primary care doctor.
There are everyday actions you can take to stay healthy.
-
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it.
-
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or
sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close
contact with sick people.
-
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing
or sneezing of infected people.
-
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school
and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
I am monitoring this
situation daily through the Center for Disease Control’s news alert system – we
will continue to keep you informed on this situation. We are also attaching
information that you might find helpful. In the meantime, if you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you,
Alisa Cook
